An interesting movie, featuring a great cast, unfortunately drowns in its own plot holes.
Hanna is a 2011 European/American action thriller film directed by Joe Wright. The film stars Irish actress Saoirse Ronan as the title character with Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. – source: wikipedia.org
The movie is about a girl, named Hanna, who grows up together with her father in the middle of nowhere. Her mother has been murdered when Hanna was still a child. As the story begins to unfold, we learn, that Hanna is everything but your average teenage girl. Her father Erik (Eric Bana), an ex CIA agent, has been training her as an assassin for her entire life and taught her some amazing martial arts skills. One day Hanna decides, that she is ready to go back into the real world, to find the murderer of her mother and bring her to justice.
After watching the trailer, I thought this movie was worth checking out. I first noticed the lead actress Saoirse Ronan on another movie I’ve reviewed in the past, called “The Way Back”. I really liked her performance on that one and in my opinion there is no denying, that she has done a very good job on Hanna as well. We’ve also got well known Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, which gives us a pretty solid set of actors.
To be honest, I imagined some sorta “Jason Bourne” like story and found the idea, that a young girl would play the tough part, very interesting. Unfortunately, the script had way too many plot holes in it, that in the end never check out. This left me with many unanswered questions and a bit of a bitter taste, so to speak of. After watching it, I really thought, that this COULD have been really great, but due to the facts mentioned above, simply was the opposite.
I’d like to go a bit more into detail, but I can’t do that without spoilers. So please click below, if you’re ready.
Right at the beginning, we are introduced to Hanna’s martial arts skills. She really knows how to defend herself when her father challenges her in a fight. There is no doubt, that this girl kicks ass
Unfortunately her father didn’t teach her anything about modern technology. Hanna seems very impressed by a simple light switch, when she crashes at some arab guys place. I wouldn’t have had a problem with this, but towards the end of the movie Hanna miraculously knows how to use a modern computer, can access the internet and even look up some information about DNA. That’s where I can no longer trick myself into buying a story. Things like that simply are too far fetched. I do not expect a movie to be 100% realistic. It’s not possible and not that important. However, if the writers break the laws of their own “story universe”, it becomes an insult to thinking people’s minds.
The fighting scenes with Hanna are pretty good. However, there is one scene, where her father gets attacked by several agents in a subway station and that one really sucks. Eric Bana’s fighting skills are less than convincing, which might have been the choreographer’s fault. Bad editing maybe made it look even worse.
On top of that, there are so many questions, that are never answered and leave you very unsatisfied. For example:
- Why did the character of Cate Blanchett have to kill that old lady now and not 15 years ago ?
- Why did the character of Cate Blanchett want to kill Hanna so badly ?
- How did Hanny kill well trained soldiers in just seconds, but had problems fighting some other guys ?
- In what way was her DNA modified ?
- What about that guy living inside the Grimm’s house ?
The list goes on, but I guess you get my point.
If you’re not that obsessed with movie details and can trick yourself into overlooking way too many plot holes, you might want to give Hanna a shot.
